With God Series Part 4 :: 1/31/16 AM

With God Part IV – The Price
Luke 18:18-30

INTRO:
This story is about a very rich man. He walked away from God very sorrowful because he was unwilling to pay the price that comes with going WITH GOD.
It is the dream of many people to be rich. They daydream about it. Talk about it. Fantasize about it.

JOKE: My friend said, I wish I had a million dollars. I said, “You know money ain’t everything!”. He said, “I know, but it can take you downtown where everything is!”

Jesus acknowledged in his answer to Peter (verse 29) that in order to go WITH GOD, you might have to leave some things or someone behind.
Not everyone will want to go with you on your journey WITH GOD.

Luke 9:57  And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
58  And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
59  And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
60  Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
61  And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.
62  And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

The Bible is filled with illustrations and verses that teach us that in order to go with God, we are going to have to make a decision – a life changing decision – to walk away from OURSELVES in order to go WITH GOD.

·         NOTE: Luke 16:13  No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

The Bible is very clear – to go WITH GOD, you must be willing to forfeit some things.

·         TURN TO Luke 14:25-33

GOING WITH GOD COST MOSES HIS POSSESSIONS
·         MosesHebrews 11:24 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter;  Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;  Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.

GOING WITH GOD COST PAUL HIS POSITION
·         The Apostle Paul – Philippians 3:4 Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more:
·         5  Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee;
·         6  Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.
·         7  But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.
·         8  Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,

In your life, if Jesus is not LORD OF ALL, He’s not LORD AT ALL.

ILLUSTRATION: In 1904 William Borden graduated from a Chicago high school. As heir to the Borden family fortune, he was already wealthy. For his high school graduation present, his parents gave 16-year-old Borden a trip around the world. As the young man traveled through Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, he felt a growing burden for the world's hurting people. Finally, Bill Borden wrote home about his "desire to be a missionary."1
One friend expressed disbelief that Bill was "throwing himself away as a missionary."
In response, Borden wrote two words in the back of his Bible: "No reserves."

Even though young Borden was wealthy, he arrived on the campus of Yale University in 1905 trying to look like just one more freshman. Very quickly, however, Borden's classmates noticed something unusual about him and it wasn't that he had lots of money. One of them wrote: "He came to college far ahead, spiritually, of any of us. He had already given his heart in full surrender to Christ and had really done it. We who were his classmates learned to lean on him and find in him a strength that was solid as a rock, just because of this settled purpose and consecration."
During his college years, Bill Borden made an entry in his personal journal that defined what his classmates were seeing in him. That entry said simply: "Say 'no' to self and 'yes' to Jesus every time."
Borden's first disappointment at Yale came when the university president spoke in a convocation about the students' need of "having a fixed purpose." After that speech, Borden wrote: "He neglected to say what our purpose should be, and where we should get the ability to persevere and the strength to resist temptations." Surveying the Yale faculty and much of the student body, Borden lamented what he saw as the end result of an empty, humanistic philosophy: moral weakness and sin-ruined lives.
During his first semester at Yale, Borden started something that would transform campus life. One of his friends described how it began: "It was well on in the first term when Bill and I began to pray together in the morning before breakfast. Borden's small morning prayer group gave birth to a movement that soon spread across the campus. By the end of his first year, 150 freshman were meeting weekly for Bible study and prayer. By the time Bill Borden was a senior, one thousand of Yale's 1,300 students were meeting in such groups.
Borden's outreach ministry was not confined to the Yale campus. He cared about widows and orphans and the disabled. He rescued drunks from the streets of New Haven. To try to rehabilitate them, he founded the Yale Hope Mission. One of Bill Borden's friends wrote that he "might often be found in the lower parts of the city at night, on the street, in a cheap lodging house or some restaurant to which he had taken a poor hungry fellow to feed him, seeking to lead men to Christ."7
Borden's missionary call narrowed to the Muslim Kansu people in China. Once he fixed his eyes on that goal, Borden never wavered. He also challenged his classmates to consider missionary service. One of them said of him: "He certainly was one of the strongest characters I have ever known, and he put backbone into the rest of us at college. There was real iron in him, and I always felt he was of the stuff martyrs were made of, and heroic missionaries of more modern times.
Although he was a millionaire, Bill seemed to "realize always that he must be about his Father's business, and not wasting time in the pursuit of amusement."
Upon graduation from Yale, Borden turned down some high-paying job offers. In his Bible, he wrote two more words: "No retreats."
William Borden went on to do graduate work at Princeton Seminary in New Jersey. When he finished his studies at Princeton, he sailed for China. Because he was hoping to work with Muslims, he stopped first in Egypt to study Arabic. While there, he contracted spinal meningitis. Within a month, 25-year-old William Borden was dead.
When the news of William Whiting Borden's death was cabled back to the U.S., the story was carried by nearly every American newspaper. "A wave of sorrow went round the world . . . Borden not only gave (away) his wealth, but himself, in a way so joyous and natural that it (seemed) a privilege rather than a
sacrifice" wrote Mary Taylor in her introduction to his biography.

Prior to his death, Borden had written two more words in his Bible. Underneath the words "No reserves" and "No retreats," he had written: "No regrets."

CONCLUSION: That is what Jesus was talking about in our text, Luke 18:29 when He said …Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God’s sake,  Who shall not receive manifold more in this present time, and in the world to come life everlasting.

Are you willing to pay the price in order to be a disciple – a follower of Jesus Christ?

What is it worth to you to go WITH GOD?

The Purpose of Preaching Part 4 :: 1/27/15 PM

The Purpose of Preaching Part IV
It Captivates the Distracted

Intro: We are living in a distracted society.  There are more distractions now than ever before.  People are “multi-tasking” almost all day. The ability to focus has been greatly hindered by the technology and inventions around us.  It is almost impossible to carry on a conversation with someone without them checking their phone for emails, texts or social media updates. With these devices, people are more accessible than ever before, but less attentive.  We are constantly being bombarded with calls, emails, texts, notifications, etc.  It is astounding at how many people we converse with during a day, but how few we actually talk to.  One of Satan’s greatest achievements is to keep the people of God so distracted that they can’t focus on what God is trying to tell them.

I. The Number of Distractions
People are distracted by:
                1. Finances – money, bills, needs, wants, late fees, credit scores, struggles, etc.
                2. Family – the drama, the conflicts, the issues, the heartaches surrounding family relationships
                3. Friends – now with social media, people can keep up with hundreds of people 24/7
                4. Fun – sports, movies, games, activities, get-togethers, social life, hobbies, dominates so much time

It doesn’t leave much time for people to focus on FINDING & FOLLOWING GOD’S WILL.
One of the benefits of preaching is it has the ability to cut through all the noise and distractions and provide clarity and focus.
The very nature of preaching confronts and captivates.
It forces us to pay attention and lend our heart and our mind to the voice of God for a little while.

II. The Numbness of Distractions

Information Overload: exposure to or provision of too much information or data
Sensory Overload: occurs when one or more of the body's senses experiences over-stimulation from the environment. There are many environmental elements that impact an individual. Examples of these elements are urbanization, crowding, noise, mass media, technology, and the explosive growth of information

Paul the Apostle warned of a condition known as “being past feeling”.
·         Ephesians 4:17This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:  Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. But ye have not so learned Christ;  If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:  That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
We are warned not to walk as other Gentiles walk – in the vanity of their mind.
·         VANITY: what is devoid of truth and appropriateness

III. The Neutralizing of Distractions

                A. A Prevailing Distraction
God had a very important message for Moses.
He had something He wanted to tell him.
NOTICE: God could have just knocked him down and spoke to him like He did Paul on the road to Damascus.
But God chose to use a poor, common, unnamed bush to deliver His message.
Moses was busy; he was working; he was distracted.
But there was a prevailing distraction – a burning bush from whence a message from God would be dispatched.
I am thankful for the burning bushes that God has put in my life to distract me from my distractions!!
·         There was something unnatural about this bush.
·         There was something unrelenting about this bush.
·         There was something uncompromising about this bush.
·         There was something unprecedented about this bush.
Sometimes God has to put something or someone in your life to pull you away from the distractions of the mundane.

                B. A Personal Detour
The only way a person can cut through the distractions is to purpose to pull away from them.
At the burning bush, Moses had to make a conscientious effort to “turn aside”.
Sometimes, people miss out on the message because they have yet to “turn aside”.
TURN ASIDE: to depart; to leave; to come to an end
Moses said – I am going to leave where I am and leave what I’m doing to focus on this burning bush.

                C. A Pursuing Desire
Moses wasn’t just content to see the bush not burn up.
His Desire for Exploration turned into a Desire for an Explanation!
He wanted to know why.
·         Exodus 3:3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.

You know what happens when God starts talking? When God has a message?
You can either walk away, or you can come forward and desire to learn more.
·         Moses could have denied it was happening.
·         He could have settled for a long-distance awareness.
·         He could have tried to put it out. (I’ve seen plenty of people that wanted to do that!)
·         He could have argued that it was impossible and something wasn’t right.
·         But he chose to pursue it and learn more. To discover the secret behind the fire.

                D. A Permanent Decision
Exodus 4:18 – He left that altar call at the burning bush a changed man.
He went home, packed his suitcases and left for Egypt.
·         God called unto him – Ex. 3:4
·         God called him – Ex. 3:10

Conclusion: If you and I would just “turn aside” and get close enough to the burning bush, God WILL call unto us!

Why do we need preaching? Because it is necessary to bring clarity and focus to those of us that are distracted.

With God Series Part 3 - The Partnership With God :: 1/17/15 AM

Part 3 - The Partnership With God
Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Intro: One of the worst things in the world that a person can experience is loneliness.  Someone once said that loneliness is the worst poverty.  People today are suffering from a loneliness that is indescribable. God didn’t intend for his crowning creation to be alone. One of the greatest truths that accompanies our theme for this year WITH GOD is the fact that we can have a Divine Partnership with the Creator.
With God means we are not alone.
With God means we have Someone that is bigger than us and wiser than us to be with us.

I. The Desire of a Partnership With God

From the beginning of the world, God had a desire to be with man.
God wanted to spend time with us and be with us and be loved by us.
Imagine leaving heaven behind to come walk with Adam in the garden in the cool of the day.
NOTE: Sinful man doesn’t have that desire.
·         Genesis 3:8  And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

Even men of God in the Bible in a time of sin and disobedience – fled from the presence of the Lord!
·         Jonah 1:3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

We read in Exodus 25:8, 9 that God – even knowing the carnal and wicked state of the nation of Israel – had a desire to be with them.
Notice verse 22 – I will meet with thee; and I will commune with thee…

In our text, Christ is issuing an invitation – Come unto me
Throughout the Scripture – God has invited sinful man to COME unto Him.
NOTE: He already came to us!
·         Luke 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
But He will only come so far.
Not it is up to us to answer that invitation.
·         John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
By the way – it is a choice! Man does have a choice.
·         John 5:40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

The worst rejection ever known is when sinful man rejects a personal invitation from God.
He stands at the door, and He knocks!

II. The Dictates of a Partnership With God – take MY yoke upon YOU; and learn of ME

The problem with a lot of people is they want God to come and take on THEIR yoke, and learn of THEM!
The conditions of a partnership with God is we have to come to Him – take His yoke upon us, and learn of Him.
See – He already knows us. He doesn’t have to learn of us.
And he knows that without Him, we don’t have a life.
·         Ephesians 2:12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:

Without Him, we don’t have answers.
Without Him, we don’t have any hope.
Without Him, we can do nothing.
·         John 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

III. The Delights of a Partnership With GodI will give you rest; ye shall find rest.

Twice in these verses, Christ emphasized the joy and the blessings of become a partner with Him – on His terms.
He understand that there is not a partnership anywhere in the world that can produce the peace and rest the He does.
Relationships many times very difficult to maintain and the end result is more rejection and disappointment.
A relationship – a partnership WITH GOD will yield a life of assurance, acceptance and awareness that He really loves you.
A PARTNERSHIP WITH GOD never produces disappointment, or frustration, or rejection, or heartbreak. It is REST!

·         DEFINITION OF REST - to cause or permit one to cease from any movement or labour in order to recover and collect his strength; to keep quiet, of calm and patient expectation

The whole of Hebrews Chapter 4 deals with the rest – both now and the future rest in Heaven – that is available to us.

The only thing preventing people from ENTERING INTO HIS REST – is their unbelief.

Three Responses to Conviction :: 1/13/15 School Chapel message

Three Responses to Conviction
John 16:7-11

Conviction: to be convinced of guilt; to be proved guilty; a guilty verdict
When we are confronted with the fact that we have done something wrong, our response is VITAL to our success.

I. Get Defensive
This is when you choose to shift the blame.
This is what Adam did in the Garden of Eden.
They began to shift the blame – to point to others as the “reason”.
Getting defensive is demonstrated in a number of ways:
1.       I didn’t know
2.       I couldn’t help it
3.       I got tricked
4.       I had no control over what happened.
5.       People around me make it hard for me to do right
6.       It’s not that bad
7.       I’m not the only one doing it; or Everybody is doing it.
8.       Why are you always picking on me?
9.       Nobody’s perfect.
10.   That’s ok for you, but that is not for me.
11.   You might think it’s wrong, but I don’t think it is.
12.   The Bible is only man’s opinion; it doesn’t count.
13.   You don’t understand how I am.

II. Get Angry
·         Acts 7:54  When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.

A common reaction to conviction is to get angry at the message, or the messenger.
The Bible is filled of stories of people that got angry when confronted with the truth.
NOTE: Jesus wasn’t killed by harlots or drug dealers or bank robbers.
He was murdered by religious people that had wicked hearts and got angry when confronted about it.

Same is found in the book of Acts 5:29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. 30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. 31 Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him. 33 When they heard that, they were cut to the heart, and took counsel to slay them.

III. Get Right

When it comes to your sin:
·         2 Samuel 12:7  And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;

When it comes to your soul:

·         Acts 2:37  Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

The Purpose of Preaching Part 2 :: 1/13/15 PM

The Purpose of Preaching Part II
It Counteracts the Darkness

Intro: Last week we looked at Part 1 of the series with a message entitled Preaching Conveys the Desires of God.  We looked at how preaching is the mode by which God has chosen to communicate His will to His people.

                A. Preaching Confronts the Darkness
·         2 Peter 1:19  We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
There’s nothing more confrontational than Holy Ghost anointed, Bible preaching.
It was designed by God to be a voice for right, a voice for God.

·         Isaiah 58:1 Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.

                B. Preaching Condemns the Darkness

·         Isaiah 5:20  Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
·         1 Corinthians 4:5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.
·         2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
·         1 Peter 2:9  But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

                C. Preaching Counteracts the Darkness
I love the way our Bible starts out.
The earth was without form and void, and DARKNESS was upon the face of the deep.
AND THE SPIRIT OF GOD MOVED UPON THE FACE OF THE WATERS. AND GOD SAID…..
Isn’t it amazing that the first time we see darkness in our Bible, we see the Holy Spirit moving through the WORD OF GOD!!

·         Psalms 18:28  For thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.
·         Psalms 119:105  Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
·         Psalms 119:130  The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.

With God Series Part 2 :: 1/10/16

Part 2 – The Perfection With God
Matthew 19:21  Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

Intro: In our text, Jesus is talking with the rich young ruler.  After listening to his list of good deeds and good qualities, Jesus was quick to point out that he was imperfect. In Mark 10, Jesus said, “One thing thou lackest…”

Our theme this year is “With God”. I want to point out today that “With God” comes a perfection – a completion – a wholeness that you can’t find anywhere else. It doesn’t matter how much you have going for you. If you are without God – you are lacking. You are in desperate need of HIM to fill that emptiness, that void in your life.  It is God’s will to see you PERFECTED – COMPLETE in Him.  You can’t do it WITHOUT HIM. Only when you discover the perfection of God can you be perfect WITH GOD.

NOTE:
·         Ephesians 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
·         Hebrews 10:14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.
·         Colossians 4:12 Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.

Turn to Hebrews 6:9

A. The Desire for the Believer – vs. 11 And we desire that every one of you…
                B. The Diligence of the Believer – vs. 11b …shew the same diligence… vs. 12 That ye be not slothful…
                C. The Dividends of the Believer – vs. 12 – inherit the promises – IT PAYS TO GO WITH GOD!

I. With God we have Perfect Communication

Look in our text: verse 18 - …it was impossible for God to lie…

·         Psalms 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
·         James 1:25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

In verse 13, God made a promise to Abraham. Multiple times we see references to the words “oath” and “swear”.
Verse 17 emphasizes God’s desire to build trust with us THROUGH THE PERFECTION OF HIS WORD.
IMMUTABILITY - not transposed, not to be transferred, fixed, unalterable
It is impossible for God to lie.
·         POINT – if God couldn’t lie to Abraham, he can’t lie to us.

With God – we have perfect communication.
·         Titus 1:2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;
·         John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

II. With God we have Perfect Confirmation

Notice verse 16 – an oath for confirmation is to them AND END OF ALL STRIFE.
Mankind is plagued with doubts and fears.
Apart from God, we have no hope and no peace.
God will not provide peace – cannot provide peace – to the person who deliberately shuts Him off from their life.
Life apart from God is a miserable existence.
WITH GOD – we have peace.
Is it possible for us to experience perfect peace? Perfect confirmation?
·         Isaiah 26:3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
·         Psalms 37:37 Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace.

Notice verse 16 – and an oath for confirmation is to them and end of all strife.
Man is looking for assurances – answers to unresolved conflicts and doubts.
They are seeking a GUARANTEE.
NOTICE verse 11 – the FULL ASSURANCE OF HOPE.
A life WITHOUT GOD will be a life WITHOUT CONFIRMATION.

III. With God we have Perfect Consolation

Not only With God can we have peace, but With God we can have hope.
Peace is trusting in God in the PRESENT. Hope is trusting in God in the FUTURE.
DEFINITION OF CONSOLATION: consolation, comfort, solace; that which affords comfort or refreshment
·         John 17:12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost…

Notice verse 19 – “Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure (Gr. asphales as-fal-ace’) and stedfast…
An anchor of the soul. What a phrase!
No drifting.
No being pushed and pulled all over the place.
We have no fear of being lost or being tossed to and fro.
We have a STRONG CONSOLATION that we can flee to for refuge.

We can only have that STRONG CONSOLATION when we are WITH GOD!

Watch Out For Winter :: 1/3/16 PM

Watch Out For Winter
II Timothy 4:21

Intro: In this chapter, Paul had 4 things on his mind.  Let's notice them.

1. The Carnality of the Flock – vs. 1-4
  1. Reminded the church that they will face God.
  2. They had the wrong desires (lusts vs. 3)
  3. Didn't want straight preaching.
2. The Compromisers of the Faith – vs. 10
  1. Demas had walked with Paul – see Phil. 1:24
  2. Paul was in prison; Demas left him there.
  3. Didn't want to identify with suffering or danger.
  4. Loved this PRESENT world more than the next.
3. The Controversies of the Foe – vs. 14
  1. Paul made no mistake who he was talking about.
  2. Described him distinctly – the coppersmith.
  3. Was more than likely wealthy as well as talented.
  4. He greatly withstood the words of the man of God.
  5. Told Timothy to beware of him.
4. The Challenges of the Future – vs. 21
     Winter is a picture of:
  1. Fruitlessness – no blooms, no fruit, no produce
  2. Leaflessness  - empty, bare, ugly; not beautiful; not attractive
  3. Darkness – longer nights; shorter days; less light available
  4. Coldness – no natural heat; any extra heat requires effort
  5. Deadness – the Christian life is a cycle of life and deadness
Paul was concerned about the coming winter.  It represented challenges ahead.
He needed three things to help him make it through.  If we are going to survive the winter, we will need these three things as well.

Notice His Accomplishment – I have finished my course.
Notice His Acknowledgement – I have fought a good fight.
But… Notice His Admission – it’s not over YET!  Challenges are ahead.

I. A Supernatural Cloke – vs. 13
He left it at Troas. See Acts 20:6-12
It was his 3rd missionary journey. His last time in Troas. He raised Eutychus from the dead.
Cloak means 'mantle'. Phelones; (fell-on’-ace) a traveling cloke, used for protection against stormy weather
Picture of the power of God; similar to Elijah and Elisha
He couldn't stop the winter; but he could have a cloke!!
Protection from the storm; help stay warm when the world is cold!

II. A Scriptural Comfort – vs. 13b
Parchments: Greek: membrane: the membrane (skin) of a sheep
A Lamb had to die to provide him with those comforting words; Heb. 12:2 our compass
"especially the parchments" means he had proper emphasis

III. A Spiritual Companion – vs. 11
He was no doubt discouraged over Demas leaving.
Needed Timothy and John Mark.
Too many Demas' and not enough John Mark's.

Too many Alexander's as well!

With God Series
Mark 10:27 And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.

The title of my message is the theme for our church in 2016 – WITH GOD
"With God" is used in this verse twice.

With God Series Part 1
The Possibilities With God
Intro: The context of this verse is found in a conversation pertaining to the salvation of a rich man.
The story of this young, man begins in verse 17. Matt. 19 and Luke 18 tell the same story, adding some details:
1. He was Willing – verse 17 says he came running. He wasn’t reluctant; he wasn’t disinterested. He was eager.
2. He was a Worker – what must I DO that I may inherit eternal life. He was more than willing to try to EARN it.
3. He was Well Behaved – all these have I observed from my youth
BUT -  4. He was Wealthy – vs. 22 says GREAT POSSESSIONS. Luke 18 says VERY RICH.
There was one commandment he couldn’t obey - Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

First of all – look at verse 23 – Jesus said, “How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!”
There’s a difference in something being hard, and something being impossible.
Verse 24 – the disciples were astonished at his words. Why?
NOTICE VERSE 14, 15.  He had just preached that you couldn’t receive the kingdom of God unless you came a child.
Now he’s saying it’s hard.
But they weren’t listening to what he was saying.

Here’s the question – Is it God’s will for men to be saved?
·         2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

The key that we need to remember about the POSSIBILITIES THAT EXIST WITH GOD – it has to line up with His will.
If something is God’s will, it is not a problem for God to make it come to pass.
If something is NOT God’s will, it is out of character for God to make it happen.
·         NOTE: Many people determine their will, then try to recruit God to make it happen.
Rather than determine God’s will, and allow Him to make it happen.
This verse explains the delicate balance between the will of God and the will of man.
Is it possible for a rich man to be saved? Yes.
Is it hard? Yes. Why? Because he puts his trust in riches.
The possibilities WITH GOD are uncomplicated – if it is His will, He can.

I. The Possibilities With God are Unequaledwith men it is impossible…

Men are incredible creatures.
The Psalmist described man as “For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.Psalms 8:5
The creativity of man and the inventions of man are incredible.
The scientific breakthroughs, the technological advancements are mind boggling.
The ability and potential of the human mind is incredible.
Of course, Einstein said, Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.

Jesus was very clear – man cannot do everything.
The POSSIBILITIES with man are LIMITED.
He cannot be saved IN HIS OWN POWER AND TRUSTING IN HIS OWN THINGS.
NOTICE the words of Jesus in verse 25 – it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

The disciples asked – Who then can be saved?
Man cannot save himself.
·         He is dead. He needs to be resurrected.
·         He is a stranger and an alien from God. He needs to be brought nigh.
·         He is blind. He needs sight.
·         He is sick. He needs healing.
·         He is lost. He needs to be found.
·         He is an enemy of God. He needs to be reconciled.
Can God save a sinner?  Can an unbeliever be saved?
With man, it is impossible – BUT NOT WITH GOD!!

II. The Possibilities With God are Unlimitedall things are possible

God expands the statement from the possibility of salvation to include the possibility of ALL THINGS.
That is a huge statement. LOOK AT IT! - FOR WITH GOD ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE.

·         Ephesians 3:20  Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,

That means ALL THINGS.
·         That includes situations.
·         That includes your relationships.
·         That includes your finances
·         That includes your spiritual needs
·         That includes your job
·         That includes your church
·         That includes your soul-winning
·         That includes your giving
·         That includes your child-training
·         That includes your marriage
