Christ and Sinners :: 3/27/16 AM

Jesus and Sinners
Matt. 9:1-13

Intro: Some things just go together. We say and hear things every day that just go together. For example:
·         Socks and shoes
·         Ham and eggs
·         Mustard and ketchup
·         Salt and pepper
·         Cream and sugar
·         Corn on the cob and Old Bay Seasoning!

If there were ever two more opposite words, it is the word “Jesus” and the word “sinners”.
When we hear the name Jesus, our minds go to a wide variety of adjectives.
·         Isaiah 9:6 said he would be called, “Wonderful”.
·         1 Peter 2:22 described Him as “Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:”
Yet – here in just 13 verses, we find the word “sins” and “sinners” found no less than 6 times.

I. Jesus Came for Sinners
·         vs. 1 “he came into his own city”
·         vs. 13 “…for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

It is important to realize that sinners were the reason that Jesus came.
·         Luke 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

The reason that the precious Son of God left His ivory palaces in Heaven was sinful man.
The reason that the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us was sinners.
The reason that Jesus was born of a virgin and laid in a manger was sinners.
·         John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

From the richest politician in Congress to the homeless drug addict living under the bridge – Jesus came for sinners.
From the drug lords of South America to the Jr high school boy selling pot out of his lunch box – Jesus came for sinners.
From the high society madam to the teenage unwed mother – Jesus came for sinners.
From the Mafia kingpin to the Sunday School kid – Jesus came for sinners.
From the religious cult leaders to the atheist college student – Jesus came for sinners.
From the convicted inmate down at the jail to the white haired little old lady in the nursing home – Jesus came…
From the Pope to the pimp – from the White House to the whore house – Jesus came for sinners.
Jesus came to save Peter, and he came to save Pilate.
He came to save John the Beloved, and he came to save Judas.
·         1 Timothy 1:15  This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

You know that prostitute walking down Dundalk Avenue? Jesus came for her!
You know that man running the liquor store on Eastern Avenue? Jesus came for him!
You know that gang crawling the streets of West Baltimore? Jesus came for them!
You know that homeless man at the top of the I-95 exit ramp? Jesus came for him.
You know that group lined up at the methadone clinic? Jesus came for them!
There’s not a man, or woman, or boy or girl alive today that Jesus didn’t come for.
It is just as natural to find Jesus with the sinners as it is to find an ambulance at a car wreck.
It’s just as natural to find Jesus with sinners as it is to find a bail bondsman next to the county jail.

II. Jesus Cares for Sinners – vs. 10, 11 “Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?”

Jesus didn’t just come for sinners, but He genuinely cares for sinners.
It would have been enough if He had come and died because His Father asked Him to.
But He did it willingly!
·         John 10:18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself.

As repulsive and disgusting as we were, Jesus still cared!
His love for sinners far surpasses even our own ability to comprehend.
His attitude toward sinners was so that they came to him. (see verse 10)
·         Luke 15:2 And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.
·         John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

Examples:
·         Luke 7:37-48 – the sinful woman that washed Jesus’ feet with her tears
·         Matthew 9:36 But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.

III. Jesus’ Cure for Sinners – vs. 12 – “They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.”

His description of sinful man was likened to that of a man that was diseased and sick.
The prophet Isaiah preached the same message in Isaiah chapter 1.
·         Isaiah 1:4 Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.
·         5 Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.
·         6 From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment.

Isaiah 52 says “by his stripes, we are healed.”
This is not physical healing as some TV evangelists will try to tell you.
Jesus didn’t die on the cross to cure you of cancer.
He wasn’t scourged and beaten with a cat-of-nine tails to heal your failing kidneys or your tumor.
You could be cured of your cancer, and still die and go to Hell.
You could be healed of all your physical sicknesses and still go to a Christ-less eternity.
This healing was a much more significant healing.
This was a cure for man’s hereditary sickness – the sin problem. (we got it from our father, Adam)
This was a cure for man’s ultimate sickness – the sin problem. (it doesn’t get any worse than this!)
This was a cure for man’s fatal sickness – the sin problem. (the wages of sin is death)
·         James 1:14  But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

John the Baptist didn’t say “Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the cancers of the world”
John the Baptist didn’t say “Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the tumors of the world”
John the Baptist didn’t say “Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the diseases of the world”
John the Baptist didn’t say “Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the headaches, the ear aches, the backaches, the stomachaches of the world”

He said – “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away THE SIN OF THE WORLD!”

·         Malachi 4:2  But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings;

                A. His Cure is Repentance – vs. 13 “…for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
·         Romans 2:4  Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?

B. His Cure is Forgiveness – vs. 2, 5, 6
This man that was brought to Jesus was in more desperate need of forgiveness than he was physical health and healing.
People saw a crippled man; Jesus saw a sinful man.

C. His Cure is Salvation

·         I Tim. 1:15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

Hope for the Dysfunctional Family Part 4 :: 3/13/16

Part 4
Genesis 2:15-25

Intro: We have examined the husband – the HEAD of the home. Tonight, we will look at the wife – the HELP of the home.  Solomon said this about the wife:
·         Proverbs 14:1 Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.

The wife can be instrumental in BUILDING UP her home, or BREAKING UP her home.

The world has successfully distorted and perverted the will of God for the wife.
Hollywood has flourished depicting women as the hero and men as the villans.
TV shows and movies have reduced men to the role of helpmeet many times.
It’s barbaric and “stone age” to show a man being a gentleman.
It’s old fashioned to show a woman as helpless and in need of a man.
We have women driving dump trucks and men work at the daycare center.
Women are the detectives solving murder cases and men are the hair salon and cosmetic experts.
Women are the warriors, and men are running the cooking shows.

·         ILLUSTRATION: After 19 years on TV, Judge Judy is the highest paid person in TV. With “Judge Judy” on air for over 16 years, Sheindlin makes $43 million. But if you take into count that she only works 52 days a year on “Judge Judy,” - Sheindlin makes roughly $900,000 per episode. Her contract has been extended to 2020.

America is FASCINATED by strong, dominating, sharp-tongued, sassy, bossy women.
She even owns another company named Queen Bee.
I saw a bumper sticker the other day that said, “Nice Women Don’t Make History”.
They might not make history, but they make God pleased.
I’m not politically correct – and I love it.

It was God’s design for the wife to ASSIST her husband in making the home complete.
Let’s notice several key facts from our text:

I. The Purpose of the Wife
·         Genesis 2:18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
It is imperative to understand the plan of God when He created the first wife.
It is clearly stated in the Scriptures that the wife’s role in the home is to be a HELP MEET.

NOTE: Adam already had a home, a job, a career and a walk with God when God brought him a wife. (see Gen. 2:15-17)
The wife wasn’t given to him to tell him what to do, she was to be his HELP.

·         I Timothy 5:14 I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.

This requires that the wife have:
·         The Right Approach to Marriage
We’re not talking about single women.
We are talking to married women.
Their approach to marriage should include a fundamental understanding of their God-given role in the marriage.
If they are lazy, the marriage will bring nothing but pain and frustration.
If they are proud and selfish, the marriage will bring nothing but pain and frustration.
A wife’s role is to HELP – to serve and to minister to the needs of her husband.
God compares the wife to the church.
God provides for the church, in turn the church serves the groom.
Our happiness is found in serving God selflessly and pleasing Him.

·         The Right Attitude toward Marriage
The woman was created with a unique and very specific purpose in mind.
To help the man achieve success and fulfillment in his life by helping him.
The man wasn’t put on the earth to fulfill the woman.
She was put on earth to fulfil her man.

The happiest woman in the world is a woman that is doing what she was created to do.

A Time of Reflection :: 3/6/16 PM

A Time of Reflection
I Corinthians 11:17-34

I. Time to Reflect on the Saints

Paul begins his discourse on the mishandling of the Lord’s Table by using the phrase “when ye come together”. (vs. 17)
Then he elaborates on now only the “who”, but the “where” in verse 18.
He said, “when ye come together IN THE CHURCH”.
We do not believe it is scriptural to have the Lord’s Supper at our house apart from the church.

NOTICE – vs. 33, 34 “when ye come together”. And “let him eat at home

The Lord’s Table is clearly a time when the local church comes together in unity and oneness.
Paul is stressing the need for unity in the body during a time of the Lord’s Supper.
It is not a time for division and selfishness.
He stresses the importance of DOCTRINAL purity in verse 19.
He stresses the importance of LOVING each other in verses 20-22.
He rebuked them for making the Lord’s Table a time of feasting and self-centered indulging of the flesh.
He used the word “despise” the church of God. This word means to minimize or think little of.
This is a time when God’s people should be of one mind, one accord and one heart like never before!

II. Time to Reflect on the Savior

Paul then began to direct their attention to the centerpiece of the Lord’s Table – THE LORD JESUS CHRIST.
He reminded them of that awful night when He was betrayed by one of his own disciples.
The setting Paul is reminding them of is the supper in the upper room when Jesus broke the bread.
They didn’t know it at the time, and they didn’t understand it, but the bread was a type and picture of his body.
Then he reminded them of the change that took place in God’s economy.
Jesus referred to “the new testament”.
The “old testament” involved the sacrifice of bulls and goats and sheep and turtledoves.
In Hebrews 12:24 it is called the “new covenant”.
There was no longer a need for priests and sacrifices – the high priest, Jesus Christ was the ultimate sacrifice.
Jesus was a priest after the order of Melchisedec.
Hebrews chapter 7 explains the difference the high priest after the order of Aaron, and the high priest after the order of Melchisedec.

The Bible puts it like this:
·         Hebrews 7:22  By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.
·         23  And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death:
·         24  But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.
·         25  Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
·         26  For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;
·         27  Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.

III. Time to Reflect on our Self

Paul then moves our attention from the Saints, and the Savior, to our Self.
Starting in verse 27, Paul begins to emphasize a time of reflection on our inward man.
He describes it as a time of personal examination.

EXAMINE: to test, examine, prove, scrutinise (to see whether a thing is genuine or not), as metals, to recognise as genuine after examination, to approve, deem worthy

He reminds them that partaking in the Lord’s Table unworthily is dangerous and possibly even deadly.
The house of God is a place where God’s people should judge themselves.

Notice the words of the Apostle Peter:
·         1 Peter 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

He again draws a distinction between the “church of God” and “the world” in verse 32.

CONCLUSION
Tonight, let us reflect on our relationship with each other.
Let us reflect on the redemptive work of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

And let us reflect on our own hearts and judge ourselves, that we should not be judged.

Understanding the Will of God :: 3/6/16 AM

Understanding the Will of God
Ephesians 5:17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
Colossians 4:12  Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.

Intro: One of the most perplexing subjects for many Christians is this matter of the will of God.  Most people would admit to having a desire to do God’s will, if only they knew what it was. Some people struggle to reconcile God’s will to their will. In fact, Susan B. Anthony once said, “I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do, because I notice it always coincides with their own desires.”
Is it possible to know God’s will?

Let’s examine a few Biblical facts about the Will of God.

I. The Existence of the Will of God

                A. The Will of God has been Revealed
·         Deut. 29:29 The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

B. The Will of God can be Known
·         Colossians 1:9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

C. The Will of God can be Performed
·         Matthew 6:10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
·         Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
·         Matthew 12:50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

II. The Expression of the Will of God

A. For Sinners
·         Galatians 1:4  Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:
·         2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
·         Matthew 18:14 Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.
·         I Timothy 2: 4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

B. For Saints

                1. Live the Rest of our Time in the Will of God
·         I Peter 4:1 Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.

2. Abstain from Fornication
·         1 Thessalonians 4:3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:

3. Giving Thanks for Everything
·         1 Thessalonians 5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

4. Silence the Lost with your Well Doing
·         1 Peter 2:15 For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:

5. Being Transformed by the Renewed Mind
·         Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

III. The Exploration of the Will of God

                A. It is a Delight
·         Psalm 40:8 I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.

B. It is Learned
·         Psalm 143:10 Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness.

C. It is Enlightening
·         John 7:17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

D. It is Rewarding
·         Hebrews 10:36 For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.
·         1 John 2:17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

God's Menu :: 3/2/16 Chapel Message

God’s Menu
Deuteronomy 30:15-20

Intro: How many of you like to eat out?  What is your favorite restaurant? How many of you when you go there already know what you are going to order? How many of you have to look at the menu several times before you can make a choice?

I. The Choices
God also has a menu. It is a really short menu. It only has two options.

·         Deut. 30:15  See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil;

God has always kept His menu simple.
From the Garden of Eden, God’s list of options for Adam and Eve was very short.
All throughout the Bible, we are repeatedly told of the fact that we have only two options:

CHOICE 1
CHOICE 2
Life
Death
Good
Evil
Child of God
Child of Satan
Saved
Lost
Light
Darkness
Sheep
Goat
Blessings
Cursings
Everlasting life
Everlasting death
Sight
Blind
Friend of God
Enemy of God
Narrow gate
Wide gate
Heaven
Hell

God’s menu is a short menu.

II. The Choosing

Just like ordering your meal in a restaurant, you have the freedom to choose what you want.
That is what separates humans from animals – the ability to choose.
The Theological word for it is “volition”.
God didn’t give the animals in the Garden of Eden a command or a menu of options.
He gave that to mankind.
The fact that you have the ability to choose is what makes you so special to God.

                A. You Can Choose Life and Good
Nobody is forcing you – nobody is robbing you of that choice.
Now grant it, people try to influence.
God is doing everything He can to try and influence you to make the right choice.

19  I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:

                B. You Can Choose Death and Evil
Many of the people in the Bible knew their options, and after looking over the menu, they chose death.
They refused to listen to God’s warnings.
They refused to listen to God’s commands.

III. The Consequences

A. The Consequences of the Right Choice
ILLUSTRATION: Is there anyone here that has ever got their food from the waiter, and tasted of their food and was SO GLAD that they ordered that?
Have any of you ever tried to get your friend or your family members to taste of your food because it was so good?
King David said it like this:
·         Psalms 34:8  O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

      B. The Consequences of the Wrong Choice
ILLUSTRATION: How many of you have ever ordered something you didn’t like?
How many of you have ever ordered something off of the menu, and when you got it, it didn’t look anything like the picture on the menu?
How many of you have ever got your food from the waitress, took one bite, and decided that you had ordered the WRONG THING!!

They refused to listen to all those around them that begged them to choose right and choose life.
·         Proverbs 1: 24  Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;
·         25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:
·         26  I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;
·         27  When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.
·         28  Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:
·         29  For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:
·         30  They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.
·         31  Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.

WARNING!! – There is no putting that plate aside and ordering another plate. Once you’ve made that choice, and if you die having made the wrong choice, it’s over!

The best thing you can do is choose wisely before it’s too late!
