Growing In Grace Part 3 :: 5/29/16 PM

The Essential of Growing In Grace
Growing In Grace Part 3
II Peter 3:18

The Essential of Growing In Grace
Growing in Grace is absolutely essential in the life of the believer because it…

                A. Portrays a Healthy Christianity
The simple fact remains; anything that is healthy is growing.

·         Luke 2:52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
Jesus grew intellectually, physically, spiritually and socially.
Question: Besides growing physically – how do you rate in the other three categories?
Jesus grew as a man.  We should also.
Christianity is portrayed by the media and by the world as a bunch of close-minded buffoons.
Illustration: Lowes slogan = Never Stop Improving; North Face outdoor gear slogan: Never Stop Exploring
God forbid that we think because we’re saved and on our way to Heaven that’s all we need!
Laodicea church “had need of nothing” in their own mind, but actually was in great need of many things.
Jesus increased.  Are we as Christians accurately representing Him by increasing in wisdom and in favor?

Notice Christianity First Mention Principle
·         Acts 11:26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

                B. Prevents a Hardened Complacency

                                1. Complacent to Truth
·         2 Timothy 2:15  Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

                                2. Complacent to Teaching
·         Colossians 1:28  Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:

                C. Produces an Honorable Continuation

·         1 Timothy 4:16  Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
·         Col. 1:21-23  And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

Illustration: I heard about a church up North that went two years without a pastor, yet they continued to grow, people were getting saved and joining the church almost weekly!  That is a perfect example of a group of people that had been grounded and were growing.  They didn’t have to have a pastor cracking a whip over their head; they “got it”.  They understood that their growth was essential to their very existence and continuation.

The Pastor’s job is to lead his people; not to drive them.  Growing Christians have an inward motivation; an inward desire to please God.

Lest We Forget :: 5/29/16 AM

Lest We Forget
Deuteronomy 4:9  Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons’ sons;

                A. Notice the Heeding – Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things
                B. Notice the Heart – lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life… (Mine eye affecteth my heart)
                C. Notice the Heritage – but teach them to thy sons, and thy sons’ sons:

I. The Sacrifice of the Soldiers
·         John 15:13  Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Memorial Day, an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May, honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971.

News headlines this morning:

VENICE, Ca. (AP) - Vandals defaced a memorial to Vietnam war veterans in Venice – an awful sight on this Memorial Day weekend. It was covered in graffiti from end to end. The memorial was dedicated to service members who were listed as missing in action during the Vietnam War. The Los Angeles Police Department said it is not investigating the case.

HENDERSON, Ky. (AP) -- Residents of a Kentucky county are rallying and working frantically to repair and replace a Memorial Day cross display that was vandalized by a driver accused of plowing through the crosses. Police got a call just before 6 a.m. Saturday, Richmond said, alerting them that someone had driven through the display at the park. An estimated 160 crosses need to be repaired or replaced.

PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) -- Virginia's National Park Service says a portion of the Petersburg National Battlefield has been declared a crime scene after looting.

NORTH PORT, Fla. (AP) - As a staff sergeant flying in bombing raids over Nazi-occupied Europe during World War II, Michael Nicholas Tristano flirted with death on a recurring basis.  The former ball-turret gunner cheated the reaper again last week, but instead of dodging German anti-aircraft guns' flak from inside a B-17 “Flying Fortress” bomber, police say the 91-year-old veteran survived a savage attack inside his North Port home by the caregiver entrusted with his welfare. Police say Tristano's caregiver, whom he had known for at least a decade, clubbed him in the head multiple times with an aluminum oxygen tank and left him on the floor of his home to die on the night of May 15.

There are well over 50,000 homeless veterans on the streets of our nation.

To Them We Owe
© Don Nielsen

Happened today, and in the past;
Sacrifice made, for ours to last.

Wives to widows, families torn;
Gave their lives, for them we mourn.

Gone forever, souls are lost;
Freedom comes, with this cost.

Enjoy the life, they did preserve;
Fate they suffered, did not deserve.

On this day, lest we forget;
To them we owe, our life in debt.

II. The Sacrifice of the Saints

·         Hebrews 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

The statistics vary, depending on the sources.
I was researching for this message, and came across these numbers:
70 million Christians martyred since the time of Christ.
Every five minutes a Christian is martyred for their faith, an organization for persecuted Christians has claimed. According to Christian Freedom International, more than 200 million followers around the world currently face persecution, making Christians the most persecuted faith group on the planet.
Christians currently face persecution in 105 of the world’s 196 countries in a geographic sweep which extends across northern and western Africa, across the Middle East, throughout Asia and down into Indonesia.

The early church, starting in the book of Acts lists the intense persecution against the followers of Christ.
·         John 15:20  Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.

For centuries, Christians have been hunted down, persecuted, accused of everthing under the sun and put to death in some of the most cruel and horrible fashions.
SEE Hebrews 11:32-40
The author of Hebrews wanted the Christian to be motivated by the sacrifice of the martyred saints.
John, on the Isle of Patmos, saw in his vision in Rev. 17 a woman drunken with the blood of the martyrs.
·         Revelation 17:6  And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.

The sacrifice of the saints of God should motivate us to live for Jesus Christ in our generation.

III. The Sacrifice of the Savior

·         Ephesians 5:2  And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.

A. It should prompt us to Salvation
·         Hebrews 2:1  Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;  How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

B. It should prompt us to Serve

·         Romans 12:1  I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

Reverence - The Vanishing Virtue :: 5/26/16 PM

Reverence - Then Vanishing Virtue
Hebrews 12:28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:

I. The Definition of Reverence
DEFINITION: Fear mingled with respect and esteem; veneration.
Our Text:
                A. The Admonition - let us have grace, (that which affords joy, pleasure, delight, sweetness, charm, loveliness: grace of speech)
                B. The Acceptance - whereby we may serve God acceptably
                C. The Attitude - with reverence and godly fear:

II. The Disappearance of Reverence

Years ago, the slogan NO FEAR became popular. You saw it on T-shirts, bumper stickers.
It became a brand in 1989. It is the name brand of Travis Pastrana, an energy drink, X-Games, Extreme Cage fighting, etc.
It reflected an attitude of irreverence, wild living, no boundaries, no limits, no rules and fearlessness.

Somehow, over the years, the ability to respect and demonstrate reverence has disappeared.
Nobody has any manners or decency anymore.
People are VULGAR: lacking sophistication or good taste; unrefined

A word many people have never heard:
·         PROPRIETY: the state or quality of conforming to conventionally accepted standards of behavior or morals

The modern manifestations of this fact are rampant:
·         Parents cannot get their children to mind them.
·         People cursing in public.
·         Displaying profanity and vulgar bumper stickers on their car.
·         Wearing shirts and hats with profanity.
·         People rioting in the streets, burning buildings, cars, throwing rocks and bricks at police officers.
·         People getting shot by police for failing to submit to commands or do what they are told to do.
·         Police being shot just for being police.
·         Hats on and talking, laughing and playing during the National Anthem.
·         Wearing shorts and T-shirts to funerals.

II. The Demonstration of Reverence

                A. Toward God
·         Psalms 89:7 God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him.
·         Psalms 111:10  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom:

The Bible is filled with examples of God’s desire for His people to demonstrate reverence toward Him.
·         Exodus 19:10 – approaching the mountain; threat of death; wash their clothes
·         Exodus 29:35 – God had the priests put bells on the hem of their garments for the Holy of Holies
·         II Samuel 6:3 – Uzzah was killed for touching the ark of the covenant

                B. Toward the Sanctuary
·         Leviticus 19:30 Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the LORD.
·         JOHN 2:14-17 Jesus’ zeal for the house of God prompted him to make a scourge and drive them out
·         1 Timothy 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

The house of God is not a place where you come in wearing a hat, drinking coffee, talking during the service.
Getting up and going out, laying on your phone, whispering, talking, laughing, playing, sleeping, etc.
Running and playing in the church, on the platform, throwing trash on the floor, tearing up the song books, ripping the upholstery on the pews,

Notice the dress code for Ruth Chris Steakhouse
·         No Hats or caps
·         Athletic wear or sleeveless shirts
·         Sweatshirts or sweatpants
·         T-shirts with offensive graphics or language

Notice the dress code for Jury Duty:
·         Jurors are expected to dress in a manner that is respectful to the formality of the court proceedings.
·         Denim jeans, shorts, tee shirts, athletic wear, and hats are not appropriate

                C. Towards Husband
·         Ephesians 5:33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
·         I Peter 3:5  For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.

                D. Towards Parents
·         Hebrews 12:9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?
·         Ephesians 6:2 Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)
·         Exodus 21:17 And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.
·         Proverbs 20:20 Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.

                E. Towards Employer
·         Luke 20:13 Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him.
·         Ephesians 6:5  Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;
·         Col. 3:22  Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God:

F.  Towards the Pastor
·         I Thess. 5:12  And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;  And to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake.
·         1 Timothy 5:17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

Growing In Grace Part 2 :: 5/22/16 PM

Growing In Grace Series Part 2

The Expectations of Growing In Grace

II Peter 3:18; 1 Peter 2:2

The Expectations of Growth are demonstrated in…

                A. The Example of the Baby
·         1 Peter 2:2  As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
1.       The Natural Wants – a new baby desires milk; you don’t have to teach it to be hungry
2.       The New Wonder – everything is so fascinating and interesting to a newborn baby
3.       The Nurturing Word – the word of God, when received, will cause you to grow.

1. A child requires Attention
·         Proverbs 29:15 …a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.
2. A child requires Assistance
·         1 Thessalonians 2:11  As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children,
3. A child requires Admonition
·         Ephesians 6:4  And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

What does this tell us?  Two things: Hunger is natural, and Growth is natural.
Just as it is unnatural and unhealthy for a new baby not to grow and put on weight and stature, it is unnatural and unhealthy for a Christian not to grow in grace and knowledge.

                B. The Exhortations of the Bible
·         Ephesians 4:13, 14 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:  From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
·         1 Peter 5:10  But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.
·         Colossians 2:7  Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
·         1 Corinthians 15:58  Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord,…

                C. The Edification of the Believer

·         Philippians 3:12  Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.
·         1 Thessalonians 3:12  And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you:

Conclusion:  It is important to understand that growth is possible ONLY after birth.
If you have never been born again, it will explain a lack of growth and understanding in your life.

Get saved, and then you can begin to move forward.  Only then will you begin to grow.

God Knows :: 5/15/16 AM

God Knows
Acts 15:18; I Cor. 3:18-20

Intro: We live in the Information Age. Man’s ability to gather and store information has never been this impressive since the beginning of civilization.

Many of us use memory sticks and portable hard drives to carry data around with us – they have become a part of everyday life and, like all devices, they’re getting smaller and smaller. However researchers at IBM have pushed the envelope and managed to store and retrieve digital data from the world’s smallest storage device – an array that is a mere 12 atoms in size!

I want to draw our attention this morning to the Omniscience of God - to God’s ability to KNOW.
When it seems that nobody knows or cares what is going on in our lives, GOD KNOWS!
In God’s Word, we discover that the wisdom of this world is FOOLISHNESS WITH GOD.
The smartest of men are fools in the eyes of God.

I. God Knows all about the Worlds

                A. He Knows the Sparrows
·         Matthew 10:29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.

FACTS: How many KINDS of birds are there in the world? The answer to that is about 10 thousand. Several of these kinds, or species, are numbered over 3 billion in the world.
HOW MANY BIRDS ARE THERE IN THE WORLD? There are lots of kinds of birds that are very common, including some sea birds that spend their whole lives flying around the ocean except when they are having babies on some tiny island. That makes them very hard to count correctly. All together the total number of wild birds in the world is somewhere between 100 billion and 400 billion! The fact that there is such a big difference in those numbers shows how hard it is to count them all.

                B. He Knows the Space
·         Psalm 147:4 He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names. Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite.

FACTS: The Hubble Space Telescope site estimates that there are about 10 billion galaxies in the observable universe! The number of stars in a galaxy varies, but assuming an average of 100 billion stars per galaxy means that there are about 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (that's 1 billion trillion) (21 zero’s) stars in the observable universe! A recent German super-computer simulation estimates that the number may be as high as 500 billion, with many older than the Milky Way.

HOW MANY STARS ARE THERE? Astronomers estimate there are about 200 billion stars in the Milky Way alone. Outside that, there are millions upon millions of other galaxies also!

And God calleth them all by their names!

II. God Knows all about our Ways
·         Psalm 139:3 Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.
·         Psalms 103:14  For he knoweth our frame…

A. He Knows my Movements
·         Psalm 139:1 O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me.  Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising,

FACTS: There are 7.3 billion people in the world.  God is able to keep up with every time one of them stands up, when one of them sits down, when one of them lies down. FURTHERMORE, He knows why they stood up, and where, and for how long.
God knows where I am at all times.
·         Psalm 139:7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?
·         8  If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.
·         9  If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;
·         10  Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.

B. He Knows my Meditations
·         Psalm 139:2b …thou understandest my thought afar off.
·         Psalm 44:20  If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god; Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.
·         I Cor. 3:20 And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.

FACT: There are over 7.3 billion people in the world. Each one has thousands of thoughts per day. A number of years ago the NSF (National Science Foundation) estimated that our brains produce as many as 12,000 to 50,000 thoughts per day depending on how 'deep' a thinker you are (other estimates run as high as 60,000/day).
As for regular life, what's disturbing about these 50,000 thoughts per day is that the vast majority of them are pure nonsense. We often dwell in the past or the future, obsessing about mistakes we might have made, battling guilt, planning ahead or worrying. We are constantly drifting into fantasy, fiction and negativity. GOD KNOWS EVERY THOUGHT OF EVERY PERSON ON THE EARTH AT ALL TIMES.
FURTHERMORE, HE KNEW THEM BEFORE YOU THOUGHT THEM (…my thoughts afar off.)

FACT: To further complicate this, there are 6,912 main languages and 39,491 alternate language names and dialects.
God knows everybody’s thoughts. From afar. In their own language. 7 ½ billion people – 50,000 thoughts per day.

C. He knows my Material Needs
Matthew 6:8  Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. Vs. 31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?  (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

FACT: The number of needs that each individual has is innumerable. GOD KNOWS “what things”.

                D. He Knows ME
·         Matthew 10:30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
FACT: The adult human head has anywhere from 85,000 to 150,000 hairs. On the average, based on your hair color,
·         Blonde 146,000
·         Black 110,000
·         Brunette 100,000
·         Red 86,000
We lose about 100 hairs a day.

JOKE: There are three ways a man wears his hair - parted- un-parted and departed!
There are 3 stages of hair growth: fuzz, is and was!
God now only knows how many hairs we have, but each hair is numbered. Individually. For all 7.3 billion people.

III. God Knows all about our What-ifs

FACT: God knows the probable as well as the actual. God knows what WOULD have happened and what COULD have happened, just as well as He knows what ACTUALLY happened.
·         Matthew 11:20-23 20 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not: Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.  But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.  But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

God is able to know the PROBABLE AND THE POSSIBLE as easily as He knows ACTUAL.

Conclusion: Isaiah 57:15  For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

God LIVES IN ETERNITY. No time zones; no bed-time; no nap-time; PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE IS ALL THE SAME TO HIM.  BOTTOM LINE: God knows!

God knows every person here. He knows if you have been saved or not. He knows where you will spend eternity. He knows if you’ve accepted Him as your Savior or not.

Raise 'Em Right :: Mother's Day AM

Raise ‘Em Right
II Timothy 1:4, 5; 3:14, 15

JOKE: Three sons left home, went out on their own and became very prosperous. Getting back together, they discussed the gifts they were able to give their elderly mother for Mother’s Day.
The first said, "I bought her a brand new big house."
The second said," I sent her a Mercedes with a driver."
The third smiled and said, "I've got you, both beat. You know how Mom enjoys the Bible, and you know she can't see very well. I sent her a very rare, brown parrot that can recite the entire Bible. It took 20 monks in a monastery 12 years to teach him. I had to pledge to contribute $100,000.00 a year for 10 years, but it was worth it. Mom just has to name the chapter and verse, and the parrot will recite it."
Soon thereafter, they dropped in to see her.
"Milton," she told the first son, "This house you bought me is so huge. I live in only one room, but I have to clean the whole house."
"Marvin," she told her second son, "I am too old to travel. I stay home all the time, so I never use the Mercedes. And the driver just sits around doing nothing all day!"
"Dearest Melvin," she told her third son, "You were the only son to have the good sense to know what your mother likes. That was the most tender fried chicken I’ve ever eaten!"

Intro: The name Timothy means “honouring God”. His mother had a desire for her son to grow up and honor God. As it turned out, Timothy did indeed honor God with his life.  What did his mother have that mothers today should have? What did she do that produced a young man that honored God with his life?

I. Right Assurances

In a day when parents are obsessed with their child’s “self-esteem”, we need to teach our children the importance of putting their assurance in the right things.

·         II Tim. 3:14  But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;  And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

                A. The Origin of his Assuranceknowing of whom thou hast learned them
·         II Tim. 1:5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

                B. The Object of his Assurancecontinue thou in the THINGS which thou has learned and has been assured of
His mother and grandmother taught him to be assured - not in himself, but in the Scriptures.
We know from I Tim. 5:23 that he was a sickly and weak young man, plagued with “often infirmities.”
Paul even had to remind him not to have the “spirit of fear” in II Tim. 1:7

                C. The Outcome of his Assurancewhich are able to make thee wise unto salvation
His mother was not concerned about her son having the wisdom of this world.
She wasn’t focused on him being “street wise”.
She wanted him to have a godly wisdom; a wisdom that produced salvation.

II. Right Associations

·         II Tim. 1:4  Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy…Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

We live in a time when children are exposed to all the wrong influences, and not enough of the right influences.
People with the most vile and ungodly lifestyles are treated as heroes and celebrities, while those that live godly suffer persecution and reproach.
Athletes, movie stars, musicians, celebrities – all clamoring for the attention and affections of our children.

Example:
·         Prince – a cross-dressing, drug addict is celebrated as a superstar
·         BeyoncĂ© – Adele called her “Jesus Christ” last week, and President Obama referred to her in a speech yesterday at Howard University as the woman that runs the world.

Paul was one of those people that was imprisoned, beaten, stoned to death, and martyred for his faith.
He wrote the church at Corinth - 1 Corinthians 4:13  Being defamed, we intreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day.

Timothy’s mother and grandmother made sure that Timothy hung around the right people.
I Tim. 1:2 – Paul called him “my son in the faith”.
The Scripture tells us that Timothy’s mother was a Jew, and his father was a Greek.
There is no record of Timothy’s father anywhere in the Scriptures – we know nothing about him.
This phrase was generally used to describe the convert or on that had been instrumental in leading someone to Christ.
Acts 16:1-3 tells us that his mother and grandmother allowed Timothy to travel with Paul.
They allowed God’s man to take their son under his wing and personally influence and invest in his life.

Paul encouraged Timothy how to behave:
·         1 Timothy 3:15  But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

Paul encouraged Timothy not to let his youth hinder his ability to lead:
·         1 Timothy 4:12  Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

Paul taught Timothy “SOUND WORDS”.
·         II Tim. 1:13 Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.

III. Right Aspirations

Timothy’s mother and grandmother used their influence to instill within Timothy the right kind of desires.
Timothy had an amazing heart for God and for the work of God.
Paul referred to Timothy in his letter to the Corinthians several times:
·         1 Corinthians 4:17  For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus, who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ, as I teach every where in every church.
·         1 Corinthians 16:10 Now if Timotheus come, see that he may be with you without fear: for he worketh the work of the Lord, as I also do.

Paul’s statement concerning Timothy was one of the highest compliments Paul ever gave anybody.
·         Philippians 2:19 But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state. For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state.  For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ’s. But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel.

The Scriptures are filled with many positive things about Timothy and his desire to serve the Lord.
He was one of Paul’s most trusted and reliable helpers.
Paul referred to him as:
·         My workfellow – Rom. 16:1
·         Our brother, and minister of God, and our fellowlabourer in the gospel of Christ, - I Thess. 3:2
·         Timotheus, who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, - I Cor. 4:17

When Paul was in prison, he wrote Timothy – the pastor of the church at Ephesus.
It is evident that Timothy had a heart for God and a love for ministry because he had a teachable spirit.
Paul the Apostle wrote 2 very powerful and very personal books to young Timothy.

Conclusion: I believe it was the “unfeigned faith” of his mother and grandmother that produced a Timothy that God could use, that God could put his hands on and put into the ministry. On this Mother’s Day, let’s purpose in our hearts as parents to take the children that God has given us and “RAISE ‘EM RIGHT!”
